Another big international company entered the Vologda timber market. Leorsa Timber, a subsidiary of a Swiss company, has launched two pilot projects in the region, one of which is a woodprocessing plant “Kipelovo” located some 35 km from Vologda. Leorsa Timber leased the plant and is upgrading production. In particular, it bought and installed several sawmilling machines. The primary investment into the project was 2.5 rubles. According to Anton Rakhmanovsky, the company director, “the project is planned to reach European level which will bring benefit for the economy of the Vologda region: taxes for to the local budget, new jobs, better image of Vologda on the Russia’s map.” The other project is processing of roundwood at the facilities of a local company. "Knowing the difficulties that Vologda logging industry is facing – funding, logistics, technologies – we have intentionally chosen this region as a launch pad for our project of processing roundwood into high quality products for export,” says Sergey Sorokin, Leorsa Timber director for development, “We are going to help the regional timber market reach a much higher quality level".
